# A PDF won't open: password-protected or damaged files

> If the PDF is password-protected, unlock it with [Unlock PDF](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/unlock-pdf/) (you need the password) and upload the unlocked copy. If it's damaged or too complex, re-save it or print it to a new PDF from the app that made it, then upload that copy.

## Match the message you see

| Message | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **This PDF is password-protected** | The file is encrypted, so PDFBetter can't read the pages. | Unlock it first, then open the unlocked copy (steps below). |
| **This PDF couldn’t be opened** / **This file doesn't look like a valid PDF, or it is damaged.** | The file is broken or isn't really a PDF (for example a renamed image or an incomplete download). | Download it again, or re-save it from the app that created it, or print it to a new PDF. |
| **This PDF is too complex to open safely.** | The file's internal structure is far larger than its pages need, which can freeze a browser or server. | Save or print it to a new PDF, then upload that. |
| **“…” can’t be opened here.** | The file type isn't supported. | Use PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel or an image. |
| **We can’t find this document** | It was deleted, belongs to another account, or was a guest draft in a different browser. | Check the [trash](https://help.pdfbetter.com/privacy-security/delete-documents-and-trash/), log in to the right account, or use the browser you started in. |
| **This guest draft has expired** | Guest drafts are deleted 1 hour after they're created. | Click **Upload again**; [create a free account](https://help.pdfbetter.com/getting-started/create-account-keep-drafts/) to keep future drafts. |

## Unlock a password-protected PDF

1. **Open Unlock PDF**: Go to [Unlock PDF](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/unlock-pdf/), or click **Unlock PDF** on the error screen. It runs in your browser and needs no account.
2. **Enter the password**: Type the password you were given. PDFBetter can't remove a password you don't know; ask whoever sent the file.
3. **Upload the unlocked copy**: Download the unlocked PDF, then upload or open that copy in the editor.

## Fix a damaged PDF

- Download the file again. Email attachments and interrupted downloads are the most common cause.
- Open it in the app that created it (Word, a scanner app, your bank's portal) and save or export it as PDF again.
- If it opens anywhere else, use that app's **Print** → **Save as PDF** to write a clean copy. This also fixes most “too complex” files.
- Word, PowerPoint or Excel files that fail with **The conversion produced no PDF. The file may be damaged.**: open them in Office, save once, and try again.

> **Note:** PDFBetter doesn't have a dedicated PDF repair tool. If none of these steps work, [contact us](https://pdfbetter.com/contact/) and say which app produced the file.

### The PDF opens in my viewer without a password. Why does PDFBetter say it's protected?

Some PDFs open freely but are still encrypted to block printing or copying. Unlock them with [Unlock PDF](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/unlock-pdf/) using the permissions (owner) password; ask the sender if you don't have it.

### Can I edit a protected PDF without unlocking it?

No. Encrypted files have to be unlocked before the editor can read their pages.
