# Split a PDF or extract pages

> Open [Split PDF](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/split-pdf/), choose **Custom ranges**, **Every N pages**, **Each page** or **By file size**, and click **Split PDF**. To pull a few pages into one new file, use [Extract pages](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/extract-pdf-pages/) instead. Both run in your browser.

- Available on: without an account, Free, Pro, Business

Do it in PDFBetter: https://pdfbetter.com/app/tools/

## Split into several files

1. **Upload the PDF**: Open Split PDF and drop the file.
2. **Choose a split mode**: **Custom ranges** (one file per range, for example `1-3` and `4-`), **Every N pages**, **Each page**, or **By file size** with a **Maximum size per file (MB)**.
3. **Check the preview**: The preview lists every output file and its pages.
4. **Click Split PDF**: Several files download as a ZIP or one by one.

Each file keeps the original page size, links and form fields of its pages. **By file size** estimates from the average page size, so a page with large images can push a part over the limit; a single page is never split.

## Extract specific pages

1. **Pick the pages to keep**: In Extract pages, click pages, `Shift`-click for a run, or type a range.
2. **Choose the order and output**: Under **Page order**, choose **Document order** or **Order I clicked**. Tick **Save each selected page as its own PDF** to get separate files.
3. **Click Extract**: The original file is unchanged.

> **Note:** Splitting doesn't reduce image quality, so a part of a large scan can still be large. Use [Compress PDF](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/compress-pdf/) on parts that must meet a size limit.

### Can it split automatically at each new invoice?

No. PDFBetter can't detect document boundaries by content; you choose the ranges.

### Why do some links stop working after a split?

Bookmarks and links that point to pages now in another part have nowhere to go.

### How do I remove pages instead?

Use [Remove pages](https://pdfbetter.com/tools/remove-pdf-pages/). See [Rotate, reorder, delete or add pages](https://help.pdfbetter.com/convert-organize/rotate-reorder-delete-pages/).
